How to Test a Capacitor for a Freezer

During Summer, The home freezer is one of the hardest working appliances in the house. It works non-stop to keep food frozen and safe to eat. However, like all appliances, the freezer can eventually break down.

One way to tell if your freezer is starting to fail is if it isn’t holding a consistent temperature. If you notice that your freezer is cycling on and off more frequently than usual, or that it’s having trouble maintaining a consistent temperature, it’s time to test the capacitor.

The capacitor helps the compressor start up by providing a boost of energy. Over time, the capacitor can lose its ability to hold a charge, which will cause the compressor to work less efficiently. As a result, the freezer will have trouble maintaining a consistent temperature.

To test the capacitor, you’ll need a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the “capacitance” setting and touch the leads to the terminals on the capacitor. If the reading is below 50 microfarads, then the capacitor is bad and needs to be replaced.

If you don’t feel comfortable testing the capacitor yourself, you can always call a freezer repair technician to come and do it for you. However, testing the capacitor is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to diagnose a problem with your freezer, so it’s worth doing if you’re comfortable using a multimeter.

Once you’ve determined that the capacitor is the problem, you’ll need to replace it. This is a relatively simple repair that you can do yourself, or you can call a freezer repair technician to do it for you.

If you decide to do the repair yourself, be sure to disconnect the power to the freezer before removing the old capacitor. Once the old capacitor is removed, simply install the new one in its place and reconnect the power. Test the freezer to make sure it’s holding a consistent temperature before putting any food back in it.

If it has started to work in its full potential then it means that the capacitor was the real problem. After applying the new capacitor, check the freezer temperature on a regular basis for the next few days to make sure that it’s holding a consistent temperature.
